Shawano county is located in northeastern Wisconsin. Population is about 42,000. Surrounded by farms, lakes, streams and forests, the communities of Shawano County live in a very enviable area. Plenty of recreational opportunities, low cost of living, good education and health care, low crime rates and easy access to the world around them. Shawano County is a beautiful place to bicycle, offering both challenging ascents and some relatively flat routes through breathtaking rural country-side. Through a group of interested individuals, who have a passion for making Shawano County a more bike/pedestrian friendlier community, a committee was created called SPOKES. SPOKES stands for Shawano Pathways Organization for Kids, Environment, and Safety.
What is the SPOKES (Bike/Pedestrian) plan?
Shawano County is examining the development of a comprehensive plan for a countywide bicycle and transportation system. Last fall we received a planning grant to begin planning a comprehensive plan. The countywide Bicycle and Pe-destrian Plan will identify potential bicycle and pedestrian transportation routes within the County. These routes may include connection of more populous ar-eas to existing trails (Mountain Bay/WIOUWASH) as well as connection to identified routes in adjoining counties.
The Shawano Lake Path/Trail plan will address specific routing, engineering, land acquisition and permitting that will be needed for the trail. The purpose of the plan is to have a detailed project plan in order to apply for Department of Transportation funds (DOT), Department of Natural Resources funds (DNR) and solicit donations both individual and corporate. It is anticipated that the plan will project costs on the various segments of the trail so work can be in series for stages as funding is secured.
